UK Trading Standards requires all pet food to be tested before it can be sold. This is for labelling purposes and to ensure that no dangerous substances are fed to beloved pets or passed up the food chain. Testing can also help you establish shelf life.

You should test for Moisture, Oil (Total Oil or Fat), Crude Protein, Crude Fibre and Ash for declaration on your label under Analytical Constituents. If your product contains Animal By Products, you should also have it tested for Salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae, the results of which must be presented to the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA). Other tests which can be carried out to assess new products or evaluate the quality in existing products include vitamins and minerals, Omega 3 & 6 and tests indicating fats are “going off” (rancidity). Antioxidants are additives put into food and feed to minimise the oxidation of fats and oils. In some countries, their use is limited or banned. A range of antioxidants can be tested for, including BHA, BHT, and propyl gallate analysis. Sciantec offers this testing individually or as a new comprehensive suite, depending on customer requirements. Sciantec takes the product, mixes and blends it so that it is even throughout and can more easily be handled and then conducts various tests using wet chemistry methods such as crude protein, moisture, crude fibre, oil (fat) and ash. In most instances, microbiology testing is also required.
You may need to carry out testing to comply with legislation for the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) or The Animal Feed (England) Regulations 2010 for example. Different products and materials have different requirements; Trading Standards are usually the best first port of call and you can find your nearest Trading Standards office on the government website.
Carrying out the minimum testing will ensure that your product is compliant, which provides safety and assurance to your customers.
Antioxidants are sometimes added to pet food to slow down the rate of oxidation of fats. These are either natural or synthetic. Natural Antioxidants which come from sources such as vegetables, herbs, fruits and berries include vitamin C and vitamin E also called tocopherols. Some examples of synthetic antioxidants are BHA & BHT, Propyl gallate and Ethoxyquin which are similar to vitamin E in their properties.
The internet provides all manner of articles some praising the health benefits and others with a more controversial view however none of the synthetic or natural antioxidants are outlawed in the UK.

The law requires a statutory statement of the Analytical Constituents which must be declared on the product label. It also requires that a certificate, showing that Salmonella is absent and Enterobacteriaceae is below the stated acceptable levels for products containing Animal By Products, must be provided to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
