As spring approaches, advisors and farmers turn their attention to establishing spring-sown cereals and maize — crops that rely heavily on early nutrient availability to drive root development, canopy formation, and yield potential. With a much shorter growing season than winter cereals, these crops must get away quickly, making the timing of nutrition absolutely critical.

In practice, this often means nitrogen is applied at drilling or at early emergence, particularly in spring barley, where early nitrogen helps support establishment while managing the risk of excess nitrogen ending up in the grain for malting crops. The challenge is that the entire nutrient window for spring crops is compressed, leaving far less flexibility in timing and underscoring the importance of getting nitrogen management right from the outset.

One of the most influential (and often overlooked) factors in getting spring nutrition right is the amount of soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) present at the time of drilling. Organic manures and other organic materials can provide a substantial proportion of the nitrogen and other nutrients needed by spring crops, but their content is highly variable. Factors such as type, dry matter, storage conditions, and application method all influence how much nitrogen becomes plant‑available.
