As many commercial cat foods contain fish-based ingredients, the presence of mercury is a concern. Cats are obligate carnivores and therefore require a high-protein diet, so fish is often included in cat food for its palatability and omega-3 fatty acid content. However, regular consumption of fish-based cat food may expose cats to elevated levels of mercury, leading to potential health issues over time.
Mercury is highly toxic and can severely adversely affect the nervous system, kidneys, and overall health of cats. Since cats are relatively small animals, their bodies have limited capacity to detoxify and excrete mercury, making them more susceptible to its harmful effects.

There are currently no universally standardised mercury limits specifically for pet food, but regulatory bodies such as FEDIAF, the European Pet Food Industry Federation, provide guidance on safe levels in animal feed. Over in the USA, the FDA advises that mercury levels in fish-based pet foods should not exceed 1.0 ppm (parts per million).
However, many experts recommend much lower concentrations to minimise potential health risks, suggesting that levels lower than 0.07ppm is the limit considered safe for cats.
